Why I Joined: The Decking Direct Journey
When Ash Razmi and his brother Murdoch founded Decking Direct, they set out to create something different in the outdoor living space. Their goal was to build a one-stop shop for everything from decking supply and installation to full project management for outdoor spaces.
With a background in sales, operations, systems and scaling business, Ash brought strong industry knowledge but he knew that building a business from the ground up required more than technical expertise and knew through his previous experience with the Auckland Business Chamber that they could help him with support, resources, and networks.
Why He Joined
Ash first joined the Auckland Business Chamber while running a different business – Bootleg Jerky – just before the COVID lockdowns.
“It was a tough timeand I knew having access to mentors, financial advisors, and supplier networks would be beneficial for growth of the company” he recalls.
That experience made a lasting impact, and when Decking Direct launched, joining the Chamber again was an easy decision. Through the Chamber, Ash gained access to the same trusted support – and more – helping him and Murdoch lay strong foundations for their new venture.
Connections That Matter
One of the most valuable outcomes of Ash’s Chamber membership has been the people he’s met. “Being part of the Chamber has put me around some really knowledgeable people,” he says. “You’re not getting sugar-coated advice – you’re getting real, honest feedback from people who’ve been there.”
These connections have now become some of Decking Direct’s key suppliers and financial partners directly through Chamber introductions. “We still regularly work with people we met through the Chamber and that the real value – building long-term relationships that grow alongside your business.”
Beyond business support, Ash has also found meaning in giving back. Through the Chamber, he became a mentor and judge for the Young Enterprise Scheme, working with aspiring young entrepreneurs.
“It’s been incredibly rewarding,” he shares. “You’re not just growing your own business – you’re helping others build theirs as well.”
Everyday Support and Big Wins
The Chamber’s Alliance Partner Program has also delivered real business saving to Decking Direct. From better deals on supplies to support with financial planning, these partnerships have helped the business run more efficiently.
And let’s not forget the fun side – Ash is the first to admit the Chamber knows how to celebrate. “They throw a great party,” he laughs. “That’s part of it too – getting out there, meeting people, and enjoying the journey.”
What Ash values most is the sense of community. At Chamber networking events, he meets people dealing with the same challenges – and celebrating the same wins.
“It’s reassuring to talk to others going through the same experiences. It’s not just networking – it’s sharing ideas, supporting each other, and growing together.”
Conclusion
For Ash Razmi and Decking Direct, joining the Auckland Business Chamber has been about more than accessing resources – it’s about connection, support, and growth. From mentorship and supplier relationships to community engagement and shared success, the Chamber has played a key role in helping Decking Direct thrive.
