Resilience beyond borders; a refugee’s tale of perseverance

Join us for episode four of our Resilience Skills Speaker Series featuring Abbas Nazari, a former Afghan refugee who fled the Taliban in 2001. Abbas’s story is one of incredible resilience and perseverance that you won’t want to miss. Despite being denied asylum in Australia and held offshore by Australian special forces, Abbas and his family eventually resettled in New Zealand. He arrived as an eight-year-old with no English but went on to achieve impressive accomplishments such as placing third in the New Zealand Spelling Bee, playing representative rugby, and graduating from university with a Bachelor’s in Diplomacy and International Relations.

Abbas’s journey of resilience continued in 2019 when he was awarded a Fulbright scholarship and completed a Master’s at Georgetown University in Washington DC. While in the United States, he wrote and published his family memoir, After The Tampa: From Afghanistan to New Zealand, which became a number one bestseller in New Zealand and received critical acclaim.

In this episode, Abbas will share his experiences of thriving in a foreign country, offering valuable insights and lessons learned along the way. This webinar promises to be an inspiring and informative conversation on resilience and how to overcome adversity.
