Speakers

Hon Matt Doocey

Matt Doocey is the Minister for Mental Health and Associate Minister of Health.  Matt has been the MP for Waimakariri since the 2014 election.

He previously worked in mental health in both New Zealand and the UK, before returning home to work at the Canterbury District Health Board.

Matt went to St Bede’s College before completing a BSc (Hons) in Social Policy, an MA in Healthcare Management from Kingston University in London, and an MSc in Global Politics from Birkbeck College, University of London.

Sir John Kirwan

Sir John Kirwan is a globally recognised mental health advocate, author, entrepreneur, and rugby legend. He’s the co-founder of Groov, a leader in workplace science and people analytics technology, lifting people and performance in organisations around the world.

In 2012, JK was knighted for his services to mental health – an honour he strives to live up to every day. He’s long been at the forefront of public campaigns about mental heath. JK was one of the first high profile athletes to help normalise conversations about mental health, and that vulnerability has paved the way for others to open up about their own experiences.

Many people also know JK as a sporting legend. He played 63 test matches for the All Blacks from 1984 to 1994 and was part of the winning 1987 Rugby World Cup team. He also played for the Warriors and had success as a rugby coach, including on the international stage with Italy and Japan.

Dr Fiona Crichton

Dr Fiona Crichton is a behavioural scientist and VP of Behavioural Science at Groov, where she develops evidence-based approaches to wellbeing, engagement, and performance in workplaces and communities across New Zealand and Australia.

A health psychology specialist with over a decade of experience, Fiona’s research on placebo and nocebo effects has been published in numerous high-impact, peer-reviewed journals, advancing understanding of how psychological factors shape health outcomes. Her background also includes work as a litigation lawyer and legal writer — an interdisciplinary perspective that informs how she approaches adaptive behaviour change and sustained high performance in demanding environments.

Alongside her workplace programmes, Fiona has worked extensively with community populations, translating behavioural science into practical tools that support mental health and wellbeing at scale. Her work is grounded in Performance-Care: an actionable framework built on the premise that performance and care are not competing priorities but mutually reinforcing ones. Through coaching, workshops, and keynotes, she equips leaders and teams with the capabilities to feel and perform at their best.

She is committed to delivering meaningful, lasting improvements in individual and organisational wellbeing and performance, in Aotearoa New Zealand and beyond.
